A History of Gateway Park
Key Pen Parks purchased this 39-acre property in June 2012. It was procured with Key Pen Parks capital and a matching grant from the State of Washington Recreation and Conservation Office.
In 2014 and 2015, public workshops were held to discuss the community’s desired features in the development of this property. Robert Droll, a landscape architect specializing in park design, worked with the community to create three conceptual designs which were presented to the public in late 2014. Public feedback on those concepts was then analyzed and a final design concept unveiled to the public in March 2015, Concept E-1. On April 13, 2015 the park district's board of commissioners voted to approve the adoption of Concept E-1 as the master plan for Gateway Park. Concept E includes sports fields, playground, restrooms, a splash pad, amphitheater and more done over the course of five construction phases.
Around the same time, Key Pen Parks received the unexpected news that it was the recipient of a $500,000 matching grant for Gateway Park development as part of the state Legislature’s 2015-17 capital budget. This unexpected money allowed the park district to jump start the Phase 1 plans of the Gateway Park project, including the design and construction of a new destination playground. Other components to Phase 1 include ingress, egress, parking, restroom facilities and a pavilion.
In the fall of 2016, Key Pen Parks began accepting bids for the Phase 1 improvements to Gateway Park. Ten bids were received and the board of directors voted at the December 12 board meeting to award a bid contract to Bob Peterson Construction Inc. The project is expected to commence before October 2017.
